I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology and Faculty of Information. My research explores the social and cultural context of digital media production and use with a focus on learning contexts and non-dominant communities.
One of my current research projects, funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Service (IMLS), involves the study of virtual reality concept art creation with young people in a juvenile rehabilitation center. This project involves the development of a VR media education program focused on art design and made for incarcerated youth, and in partnership with young people and teachers at the juvenile rehabilitation center’s in-house school. Research questions include the value of VR for this community and the ways in which it might entice participants to seek out digital arts programs at public libraries following their period of incarceration.
In another current project, I am exploring the technology access and education opportunities for refugee women, also considering the role of public libraries in the provision of services, alongside non-profits and government programs. In this study, my team is similarly investigating the historical conditions of migration, culture, and politics/governance that relate to women’s interest and opportunity to use and engage in digital literacy and non-digital technology like sewing and driving.
Theoretically, I adopt a socio-technical lens, building on theory from science and technology studies, feminist theory, anti-oppressive education, postcolonial and critical race theory. My work is situated at the intersection of education, media and cultural studies.
Methodologically, I conduct ethnographic, qualitative, and visual research. I have published in Information, Communication & Society, Comparative Education, American Educational Research Journal, Learning, Media & Technology, and Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education, among other journals, reports, and public media. I am involved with the Digital Youth Lab at the University of Washington Information School as well as Technology and Social Change Group (TASHA). I serve on committees ranging from Reel Grrls‘s Advisory Board to Inter-Network Agency for Education in Emergencies Technology and Education Task Team.
